“The Moment I Knew”

Don’t Give Up!

PODCAST TRANSCRIPT

The moment I knew I was going to be more of an actor was in two thousand six, seven, or eight. One of those years just before the last time I volunteered at the Sundance Film Festival.

I was working in the back of the theater.  Last night of the festival.  It was the award ceremony and I was to manage the back of the theater.  Making sure no one else got inside the theater. Making sure all the doors are closed during the ceremony.

So here I am sitting there. It's dark. It's cold. I got my jacket on and I'm just having my own private thoughts.

Our manager comes to the back of the theater and she said,  “Sherry, what are you doing back here in the dark?” She said,  “You come with us.  You don't belong here. You come up front with us.”

I walked up front with her and let me tell you, the moment that I walked out of the dark into the light, I literally felt this glow of light on my face.  And I felt this warmth.  And  in my gut I felt this knowing.  And I stood there with the rest of them as they announced the winners and I watched the filmmakers and actors, you know, walk up, receive their Awards and in that moment I realized, and I said it to myself, in thought I said, “ I want to be in front of the camera not behind. And it was from that moment on I began a more earnest journey as an actor.  It was 2013 when I booked my first speaking role. It was for The Walking Dead.  It would be two years later that I would ultimately go ahead and join the union because of that.  And because I kept getting those residuals too… why not lol! Anyway, that was the moment I knew.

I share this because I want you to know.. for those of you who are still trying to figure it out… look, if it's in you… if this is the path you want to be on… stay on that path.  Because I promise you, if you do, many doors will open for you so that you can walk through. People, places, things will guide you to where you need to be. So don’t give up.

Regardless of what's happening around you, Regardless of the naysayers.  You go with what’s deep down inside you.  Because if for a moment you just say ‘okay this is too hard I'm not going to do it’ or ‘this just isn't for me’ and you walk away but it keeps coming back to you, you continue to find yourself there in the world of acting, that's where you're supposed to be . It’s not supposed to be easy.  But it does get easier.  And it does become rewarding. So just stay with it.

Don't give up.
