“Yay You Have A Callback!!”

What Do You Do?

PODCAST TRANSCRIPT

Hello and welcome to another episode of An Actor's Journey!

What do you do when you get to a callback and there are sides on the table but  you’ve brought your own?

First of all, what is a callback anyway?  For those who don't know, a callback is a second audition.  You have your first audition and if they are interested in you, they will bring you back for a second.  This is a huge deal because it means that they have now put you with a smaller group of people that they are really interested in and that's a huge thumbs up!

So what do you do?  Here's my experience. I get to the callback and I am SO ready. Confident.  Focused on what I need to do.  I signed in. The young lady says, “here are sides”. I just kind of glance.  “Okay.”  Because I'm good.  I didn't say this to her but that's what I'm thinking.  I'm good because I, the professional that I am, brought my sides with me. I’m seated.  I'm focused.  I glance down at what I have to just kind of make sure I'm still in the pocket of what the scene is about. I will be ready when they call me in.

Well, about five minutes, maybe seven, before it's my turn to get called in, the reader comes out and he said, “Okay just so you know those are new sides over there.”  Just be normal.  Be calm and go in and give it what you can.”  When he left you know what I did?!  I got up and went to that table, took a look at those sides, and I thought, “oh my gosh!” lol! Quite a bit has changed! So now I grab the sides.  I sit down and I'm trying to get through it. I'm looking at it. I'm envisioning the scene because some of the scenes have changed too.  Then my name was called. I go in the room say, “Hi. Are you ready?  Yes, I'm ready.”  But all the time I’m thinking about the sides that have changed and I have not fully prepped the way I generally do.

I had about two instances of starting and stopping my audition.  But I got through it and did pretty good. I could have done better, yes. I said my goodbyes. I Thanked them.  They thanked me.  And now, I'm on my way.

Again the question.  What do you do when there are sides on the table when you walk in?  Well, this is what you do.  You don't do what I did.  When you walk in there, regardless of whether you already have your own, take a look at what's on that table and check to be sure that what's on the table isn’t  different from what you already have.  You hear what I said…make sure what's on the table isn't different from what you already have.  Because if it is then that's the time you use to fully prep.  I didn't do that and that's why by the time I got into that room I was sort of off.  Very off.

Now what do you do when you are off and it's done and you leave?  Do you beat yourself up because oh my God I screwed it up. No you don't.  You just say, ”Oh well.  That was a moment but I gave it my best. I gave it my all for what it was.”  And learn the lesson from there.  That’s  what I did.  Next time, I will know better.  That's my actor's journey. Do you have one to share?

Thanks for reading.  Enjoy your day.  And when you have a callback audition or if it's your very first audition, you have to do it in person, and there are sides available, take a look at those additional sides. I’m sure you’ll do your very best.  Because you know what, YOU GOT THIS!!
